Bringing you along on one of my
A to B A to B to C to B bicycle commutes through downtown Amsterdam. Mind you, there is some occasional swearing involved, not safe for work. 🙂

I’ve started more blogs in the last decade than I can count. Some slowly died, got replaced or lived on in the limelight of the interwebs.
The ones that survived and I enjoyed updating the most, were and are videoblogs (and you’ve seen a few on this blog by now) In the same way that I’m a Flickr addict, video brings out the creativity in me. “Hi, my name is Marc and I’m a vlogger.”
When this cycle blog saw the light of day I had a good feeling about it, but now, I’m amazed and happy with the responses it has generated, thank you all for that! It’s a good sign that I almost feel quilty when I don’t post something every day…
Anyhoo, the thing that’s itching is that I need video to become an integral part of this blog. I’ve thought of interesting angles, episode formats and I can’t wait to start shooting. Sure, I’ve done many cycle vlog episodes over the last years, but I figured these videos need to be more in line with this blog’s mantra, pushing the bike culture, providing clues, big and small. Instructive, panoramic, cultural, sidestepping, personal, etc.
So, not too long from now, don’t be surprised when your RSS 2.0 feed delivers something extra in its enclosure.
Happy biking, y’all!
(PS: after Google’s major server hickups the last few days, my sidebar items are not where they should be..they’re all at the bottom of the page. I hope that gets fixed soon.)
[UPDATE: word just got in, one of them found it, apparently it’s all over Facebook now. Nice.]

When I lived in NYC back in the day, I tried to bike as much as was humanly possible (sans helmet :)), but back then there were no handy little camera’s to shoot video. Years later I returned to one of my favorite cities, San Francisco, at a time when there WERE ample means to do so (however crappy the quality).
Riding your bike in SF can be challenging (no real bike lanes, hills, etc), but other aspects of this great city made up for that. Examples:
Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge
“Dec 28 started stormy, but it cleared up in the afternoon. So an excellent opportunity for a bike trip accross the Golden Gate Bridge, vlog style. No one got hurt during this recording.”
Turning right off GGB, speeding down to Sausalito
“After getting off the Golden Gate Bridge we turned right, and followed the way down to Sausalito. Obviously I had to brake occasionally, as I was holding the camera.”
Riding down North Point
“As I have done this in Amsterdam many times, I thought I’d give it a try in SF. Going down North Point. Lucky to have hit green lights..mostly.”
I’ve put those three recordings in one single video:

Today I biked over to the Vondelpark to see if the announced ‘Mama Bakfiets Race’ would be as much fun as the title promised it to be.
Organized by Viva Mama Magazine as a charity event for OrangeBabies.nl (donating medicines to pregnant African women with HIV, thus reducing the chance that the infants are born with HIV by 50%), it was no bare bone event, everything was taken care of.
I also bumped into Marlooz, who’s was there for professional purposes, filming the event. As it was about a race between moms on bakfietsen, often with kids on board, through Vondelpark, going from leg to leg, I proposed she could hop on the back of my bike to continue filming, adding some ‘action’ to her footage. Of course, you don’t have to ask a Dutch girl twice, excellent idea.
It was pretty amazing to see the moms’ agility on the mostly heavily packed bakfietsen while performing the stage tasks. Ranging from obstacle course to jousting. Yes, jousting. I shot some video of that, and here’s the result, you be the judge:
It was fun and truly a typical Dutch cycle phenomenon. Not something this blog was allowed to miss.
